L'histore se déroule dans un monde où certaines personnes ont le
pouvoir de transformer des objets en d'autres objets : on les appelle
des "alchimistes".
Cette transformation doit obéir à une certaine règle : l'objet
transformé et l'objet issu de la transformation doivent être de masses
équivalentes. Edward Elric est, malgré son jeune âge, un fameux
alchimiste qui a perdu son petit frère, Alphonse, lors d'une expérience
de transformation interdite. Il a cependant réussi à enfermer l'âme de
celui-ci dans une grande armure en fer. L'aventure des deux frères
commence quand ils décident de partir à la recherche d'un objet aux
mystérieux pouvoirs capable de les aider à retrouver leurs corps
initiaux : la très convoitée "pierre philosophale".
